While multiple factors go into a diagnosis likepre-diabetes, the condition is indicated by higher than normal blood sugar levels and an elevated “percentage of blood sugar attached to the oxygen-carrying protein in red blood cells called hemoglobin” according to the Mayo Clinic. Non-diet factors like smoking, stress, genetics, and inactivity can all play a role in pre-diabetes and similar ailments, but we are not powerless in combating these factors.
A healthy, high-fiber, whole foods-based diet, either alone or in conjunction with traditional medical treatment and/or alternative medicine, can be a total game-changer, both in the long run and in the short run, when it comes to the treatment of diet-related preventable diseases (which according to Purdue University, range from high cholesterol to osteoporosis). This includes the traditional stuff we know is indisputably good: fruits, veggies, whole grains, and fewer animal products and processed foods.
What do these foods share? There are a number of common denominators, but a notable one is fiber. Our favorite F word!Fiber has been shown to act as a diabetes preventer, in addition to many otherside benefits we’ve discussed before. A super-efficient and satisfying way to get this fiber and other health-promoting ingredients comes in a neat loaf (yep, ROYO bread!) in the flavor of your choice.
ROYO bread, as opposed to blood sugar–spiking, processed white bread like a bagel or a baguette, is made from a base of ground flax seeds, which provides fiber in addition to omega-3 fatty acids and other critical nutrients, like lignans. Because of the high fiber content (5g fiber in each slice!), a single ROYO sandwich will keep you full and satisfied, which makes you less likely to reach for carb-heavy foods throughout the day! Maintaining a balanced diet has the additional benefit of keeping your body running to its full potential and promoting a healthy body weight, which is another way to keep preventative diseases in check. Other blood sugar–regulating ingredients found inROYO original flavor include oat bran, psyllium husk, and oat fiber. Bonus ingredients like apple cider vinegar and ginger aid digestion and also may help with insulin sensitivity. Sounds like an all-around win to us!
